PEAC Lab's Jenna Hounslow gratefully received an invitation to present to a collaborative group of over 60 members from State and Local Government agencies, at the WALIS Community Event "Exploring Marine & Coastal Environments".
Jenna shared a novel approach to detect and locate key subsurface behaviours by sea turtles, combining biologging with artificial intelligence. This approach enables important habitats supporting those behaviours to be identified and characterised. This research was a collaboration between Murdoch University, Department of Biodiversity Conservation & Attractions Northwest Shelf Flatback Turtle Conservation Program and University of Western Australia.
Decision makers and the spatial data community were interested in this transferable approach (across species and study systems), since it may inform threatened species management and improve conservation outcomes.
Thank you to WALIS for the opportunity to share this work and network with the WALIS Community.
